[alfa] Koni "yellow" for 164

Can anyone explain the difference between these two yellow Koni's for 
the front strut of a 164?
                          part number 8641 1226  and  8641 1217
On the old Alfa 164 website the one ending with 1226 is said to be the 
correct number for US 164s (regardless of vin) while the one ending 
with 1217 is said to be valid up to a certain vin number (ca. 12/1990). 
Are the two physically different, but still interchangable? Thank you.
