Thanks for the lead.  I checked underneath around the cat and actually didn't
actually see any hangars on the cat or even on the manifold/pipes to the cat,
though there was something that looked like a long-forgotten and rusted weld
spot on it.
I did, however, locate and replace a missing nut on the passenger side
manifold outlet.  the sound coincidentally went away for a day, but is now
back.

I don't know how anyone else's V6 sounds on start up, but there has always
been this really faint metallic grind during the cranking, most noticeable
just before the engine catches.  The chirping sounds a little like this,
albeit a bit higher-pitched and definitely varies with engine speed.

Any other ideas?
