Dial gauges are used on some 2 stroke engines for determining the
ignition timing (for example, plenty of Rotax engines). For this they
often use an adaptor threading into the spark plug hole. In the
UK I bought a dial gauge with an adaptor for about #25 (~US$40)
from Dartford Karting.
