[alfa] oilways counterbored?

I've been disassembling and cleaning the secondhand 2000 cylinder block that
I'm using to build a new motor. Removing the old roll pins in the top of the
block I notice that the oilways have been counterbored, increasing the bore by
a few mm to a depth of probably 3mm. It doesn't look original but I guess it
could be. I've got two other blocks that don't look like this.

Any idea why anybdy would do that? I was going to use the brass inserts from
Alfa parts to hold the o-rings, but they will fall too far into this
counterbore and not protrude enough above the head gasket.

Could somebody shed some light on this for me - what to do? thanks,
