[alfa] Re: Refinishing Magnesium Wheels

Here's my input, somewhat out of date since I haven't had real magnesium wheels since I was a kid with a '57 Chevy. Although magnesium can be blasted and left uncoated, it oxidizes rapidly. As best as I can recall after all these years, most mag wheels were just blasted and allowed to oxidize. Most only attempted to polish the rim, as in the old Torque Thrusts. Don't know why that can't be clear coated if they can be painted. How about a clear powder coating. Cheaper than paint around here.

I don't know what's "supposed" to be so or not in this area.. and am following with interest since I have a set of heavily painted (paint heavily oxidized) original Turbinas I'll want to do something with someday. And yes, a sliver that was shaved off by someone putting in the center cap did light up and burn like an arc light with the propane torch, so they are Magnesium...

I do remember a guy with a very nice dark blue GTV at the '02 Convention, he had his Turbinas bare and clear coated, except for the inner flat ring, and the flats of the "spokes", which were the body color. Made for an unusual and interesting effect. Might have been a powder coat job, not sure though. Seemed to work for him.
