[alfa] Re: 164 manual gearbox

Michael

I hear what you say, but when a man with twenty years experience as an Alfa
mechanic both as main dealer and specialist, and with an impeccable reputation
locally tells me something, then I tend to believe it. I would also add that
he is not the only source that has told me that you can do the input shaft
bearings in situ. They also do the clutch in situ by sliding the gearbox into
the wheelarch. Very fiddly, but they do it.

Think laterally a bit, many gearbox repairs on 164s were warranty work. Having
worked in warrranty myself the boffins come up with all kinds of ways to do a
'faster fix'. This no doubt was one of them.

Incidentally, if you could see what a silk purse is being made of the sows ear
of a 164 I delivered to them (at least in the engine compartment) then you
would also have a little more faith in his statements. You lawyers are all
the same.

I hate to sound like a naysayer but these modern gearboxes don't have a
lid to whip off and take a look inside. The case is the "lid" and the gearbox
basically has to be dismantled to look at anything, let alone repair anything.
Rumours abound that various servicing can be done with the box in the car, but
that does not seem possible to me as the case locates the insides and removal
of the case is necessary to dismantle the shafts. It is not possible to remove
and replace anything on the shaft without taking the gears and bearings off
the shaft in sequence, which cannot be done with the case on.

Having said that, with the box out of the car, stripping the box, though
time consuming, should not be that difficult or expensive for a shop.

    Cheers
