[alfa] re: Alfetta instrument placement

I find the speedo mounted on the centerline of the car to be a lousy location on a road going car, though that hasn't stopped me from ordering a new Mini Cooper. When I sell my 164 and pick up the Cooper (Jan '04), one of the things that I will miss sorely is the beauty and simplicity of the 164 instrumentation. All dials swinging clockwise, with straight up an indication that all is OK. Just a glance lets you know all you really need, though you can look harder to determine actual things like speed or rpm when necessary. I'm sure I will get in more trouble with the law in the Cooper simply due to the inconvenience of looking at the speedo, not that the lawmen will want to listen to that excuse.
For race cars where actual speed isn't important this argument doesn't hold, but I agree that the Mini speedo location is purely a styling exercise. At least I'll still be able to enjoy the useful layout of my GTV...
