I find the speedo mounted on the centerline of the car to be a lousy
location on a road going car, though that hasn't stopped me from
ordering a new Mini Cooper. When I sell my 164 and pick up the Cooper
(Jan '04), one of the things that I will miss sorely is the beauty and
simplicity of the 164 instrumentation. All dials swinging clockwise,
with straight up an indication that all is OK. Just a glance lets you
know all you really need, though you can look harder to determine actual
things like speed or rpm when necessary. I'm sure I will get in more
trouble with the law in the Cooper simply due to the inconvenience of
looking at the speedo, not that the lawmen will want to listen to that
excuse.
For race cars where actual speed isn't important this argument doesn't
hold, but I agree that the Mini speedo location is purely a styling
exercise. At least I'll still be able to enjoy the useful layout of my
GTV...
