[alfa] Re: Clutch Master Cylinder Rebuild Questions- 69 Spider

I can't speak about DOT5 brake fluid's boiling point, what it may or may not
do to seals, or pedal feel. The only manufacturer I am aware of that uses it
is Harley-Davidson. My understanding is that one of the reasons they use it is
because it doesn't eat paint like DOT3 or 4. One reason that it may not be
used more is price. We used to sell a brand of DOT5 at the motorcycle shop I
used
to work at for about $8 a small bottle. Also, many people like to stick with
something they know and are familiar with. To make things confusing, DOT5.1 is
actually the next spec in the DOT3/4 lineage. Peter, we also sold Motul brake
fluid in both the motorcycle shops I have worked at. I think you'll be
pleased, but will be curious to hear your impressions.

Dean,

I need to recheck what I read. I thought it was in Braden. From memory,
the
recommendation was to change the silicone fluid very often and to not let it
sit in the system unused for very long.

I thought it was to do with moisture. Or does it eat seals? If it's high
temp and non-hydroscopic why isn't it used more? It seems to lack all of
the
negatives of mineral or synthetic based fluids.

I'm about to try the Motul RBF600 DOT5.1 synthetic fluid. I'll let you know
how it works out. This is an ABS Milano (read: high brake temps) that is
driven daily 3 seasons and sees the track a few times a year. When I say
driven, I mean sitting in traffic more than actual driving.
