Early version of the 1.7 flat four came with the same camshaft carrier
designs
as the 105hp 1.5 engines, complete with shim valve adjustment. These
moved over to the hydraulic tappet version you have quite early on in
the life of the 1.7

There is a reprint of the 1.7 supplement available from Mercian Manuals.
