Re: [alfa] crank locking tool
As said before, rope. Clean rope put in through the spark plug hole on the
compression stroke so as not to bend a valve.
This works eveytime. Just be sure to feed enough in to lock the cylinder.
It's practically free.
Can anyone point out a deficiency with this approach? I was surprised not
to have been chastised for it yet...

Subject: [alfa] crank locking tool

Re the crank locking tool, I personally would not depend on the strength of
the spark-plug threads to keep the piston from moving, per the apparent
design of the Hurlock tool. I've ripped those threads out before with the
factory head-removal tool, and I bet you'd put more force there than that
trying to break the crank pulley nut loose. They are not strong,
especially
on well-used heads. What's normal spark-plug torque, something like 18
ft/lbs? That's not much.
You can use a generic VW tool if you have the engine separated from the
trans, but with the engine trans installed, it's a little tougher. Here's
what I said to the guy asking about it yesterday: "There is a factory tool
that you can use to lock the flywheel, with the engine and trans in place,
on a 115 car with a hydraulic clutch and bellhousing. You take off the tin
cover and it slots into the flywheel teeth, bolting to a couple of the 6mm
bolt holes from the tin cover bolts to hold the flywheel from turning. I
don't think it would work on a 105 mechanical clutch bellhousing. There's
a
similar, probably almost identical looking, tool to fit 116 cars to lock
the
ring gear."
I can look up the part number for the 115 tool over the weekend if anyone's
interested.
