replace the early canister style filters.
       A stop that fits through the spark plug hole and bumps on a piston can 
be made by welding a bolt into a spark plug base.  It is handy for 
determining TDC.  Roll the piston up on one side against the bolt and mark the pointer 
location.  Turn the engine backwards until it stops again and mark the pointer. 
 TDC is half way between the marks.
       However, you mostly want to lock the crankshaft so you can tighten the 
rod and other bolts during assembly.  Plus, once assembled, you do not want 
the crank to turn and push the liners out before you attach the cylinder head.  
And It is good to lock the crankshaft at TDC while you time the cams.  For 
non of these purposes would a stop that fits against a piston top be ideal.
       I bought a tool from EMPI ( I think).  They are the VW bug performance 
people.  It is shaped like a capital I with teeth coming out on both sides of 
both ends and a bolt hole in the middle.  It fits into the teeth of the Alfa 
flywheel perfectly.  Or one side does.
