[alfa] Re: Clutch pedal pivot, 115 Spider

Hi Erik and Group:

Guess what just broke, not 10 minutes ago, on my '87 Spider? The clutch pivot pin sheared just inboard of the weld. What a PITA. At first, I thought the lever was slipping on the shaft, because the weld had cracked. So, I thought I could save the trouble of pulling the pedal box by drilling and pinning the crank and shaft. I was amazed when both parts drilled like they were made of balsa wood. With a new, sharp 1/8" bit, the drilling took maybe 45 seconds. No wonder the shafts break, the metal is incredibly soft. I've got a good, spare pedal box, but now I'm wondering if the replacement pivot pin from IAP, or others, is any better than OEM. Are all the vendors selling the same part? I'd rather wait for the new part than do the job twice. Any suggestions, any trouble to be aware of when pulling the pedal box?

Stacy, if I understood your post correctly, your clutch pivot pin has broken at the weld exiting the pedal box. If this is the case, it will get worse and shear completely. The weld on the pin is a weak point on these cars. You can buy replacements from International Auto (and others I'm sure). You are right that the pedal box is not that difficult to remove. When you put the pin in, make sure you grease it well.

Good luck.

Erik
