This is not a wives' tale.

Resting your hand on the shifter when not actually shifting the transmission
will cause excessive wear to the shift forks for sure, and possibly the
synchro sleeves.

This is not all that different from resting your foot on the clutch when not
shifting.

Jeff - Yeah, I've fixed more than a few transmissions (some more than once)
for ignorant customers who just don't get it

What about the advice of not resting your hand on the shifter when not
actually shifting? I have heard from more than a few people that resting
your hand on the shifter when not shifting can damage the transmission,
don't remember exactly which part. Old wives tale? Maybe similar to how
a heavy keychain can damage the ignition switch.
