If trunk and rear seat space are important, don't 
bother with A4 nor S60. I have a strong words against
S60. I had chance to drive a fairly new S60 to 
vegas with wife and a friend. The S60 we drove came with
the "sport" package...

My wife's tiny about 5-2 and she felt cramped in 
the back seat! The S60 looks big from outside, but 
inside is smaller than the milano, for both front 
and rear space. Not to mention wobby floaty ride 
worse than that of new camry. We had to concentrate
 hard while driving on 152 to keep the car in the 
lane... even my wife complained the car being 
unstable at times. She disliked the car so much she
told all her friends not to buy a volve :)

few alternative I've thought of (but not gonna happen)

A6 3.0 quattro is good for tahoe
jaguar s-type 3.0 too expensive
mazda mp3. fit the bills and can be fun.
focus zx3 / svt. a bit small
jetta 1.8t well...

the only one that's cheap, big, boring, but does the 
work, would be the new 4 banger camry.
