Re: Oh, that insurance thing. Again.

Hi Joe:

I've used a few companies to insure my Spider's over the past several years, and I like American Collector's. I'm also in Florida, and pay ~$180/year, for $9k coverage on my '74 and $6.5K on my '87.

My agent's name is Erik Smith, @ (800) 360-2277, ext. 220, between 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, EST. His email is: esmith@domain.elided

I'm sure your Maratona is a nice car, but I can't imagine getting coverage for $20K. The low mileage is certainly impressive, but I don't think the Maratona is different enough from a "regular" GTV-6 to justify that much of a premium. Opinions may vary, but with the current state of the market, both my Spider's are probably over-insured right now. Erik is a "car guy", and he's good to deal with, but the underwriter at Hagerty will laugh you off the phone if you call them about an '84 Alfa. Without owning the '74 Spider, I would have had a much harder time insuring just the '87, but having 2 Spider's makes it a collection, and obviously the cars are very similar to each other, so that opened the door when I added the '87.

That's the story for "collector's" insurance, but there are also companies that offer coverage for newer "exotic" cars, with values of >$25K, so that might be a loophole you can squeeze your Maratona through, if you must have the high coverage. A local friend uses Leland-West for his Ferrari 328GTS, and pays around $2K/year, with coverage of around $50K.

Digesti,

I'd like to insure my 1984 Maratona. It gets driven
<5K mi. and resides in a nice garage. Which
classic/collectible car insurance would you suggest
for such a young collectible? I'd like an agreed value
of $20K-$25K.

Discuss.
