Re: V6 Timing Belt

Excellent point. Also, a chain system is louder, heavier, has higher friction-related losses, and would impede performance (to some extent).

Graham:

Someone, when I speculate about a similar idea, pointed out to me that a chain system requires the chain be part of the lubrication system. The belt is not (except to it's detriment druing lubricant leaks) and therefore much more than a few gears and a chain would be at issue.

With all the problems with the Alfa V6's timing belt, I have to wonder, why
can't the belt be converted to a chain? It must be possible to have toothed
cam ends, crank end, and dizzy drive ends made up, and fabricate a
tensioner. I guess it must not be viable for one reason or another, or
someone would have already done it. Just thinking out loud.

BTW for any Tampa Bay Alfisti, the BG engine products truck will be at
tonight's meeting, and the BG tech session is at my place on 8-16, I will
also be doing a tech session on replacing the V6 timing belt. Contact me off
