Re: cigarette seal?



Karl,

The "cigarette seals are two rubber cylinders about the size of a
cigarettes.  They  are located on the sides of the rear main bearing cap -
the rear cap fits into a cavity in the rear wall of the block  where the
rear most crankshaft bearing rests.   The seal - called "rubber pads" in the
164 manual prevent oil from leaking pass the bearing cap/rear wall .  This
is the same setup that has been used on all if not most modern Alfa engines.
A special tool is required to insert them although a work around is
possible.
