RE: Avoiding Cracked Dashes

Erik, living here in the desert with ambient summer temps close to 120F and
upwards of 170F in closed cars, we have come to know how to prevent dash
cracks. First, don't use a commonly available product that does nothing to
prevent cracks, ArmorAll. I believe its use can accelerate cracking because
it allegedly contains alcohol.
I use 303 Aerospace Protectant, "SPF 40 Sunscreen" for rubber, vinyl,
fiberglass, tires, plastic and leather. It's a UV screening product and
doesn't give the over the top high gloss that other products do.
Manufactured by 303 Products, Inc, PO Box 966, Palo Cedro, Ca 96073. Stock
number 30340 is the 16 oz spray bottle. Their website is very informative:
www.303-products.com.
I haven't had a crack since using their product here in this extreme climate
for at least twenty years. It has to endure freezing temperatures as well at
mile-high Flagstaff.
If you don't buy from them directly, it could be hard to find in smaller
towns; I buy it locally at a marine supply store or you can find it at your
neighborhood aerospace equipment supplier.
I have no financial interest in 303 Products and the above represents my
personal opinions based on my experience.

I recently procured a very nice original dash for my '74 GTV. I would
obviously like to make sure it never cracks! I know that the primary demon
is UV radiation and termperature extremes. Is there anything else I should
look out for? Any modern chemical treatments likely to keep the material
pliable over time?
