Re: Factory oil filters

<snip>
you should be most concerned about the useful filter area inside the
filter. this turns out to be only vaguely related to the size of the can.
the following URL may be of considerable interest.

This fellow's "study" has been debated ad nauseum in several of the lists I
frequent. The conclusion that most have made is that the study is terribly
flawed. There is no scientific basis to any of the recommendations. All this
fellow did was to cut open the filters and comment on what he found inside. He
seems to believe that a plastic part is inferior to a metal part. As an
automotive design engineer explained, in many applications, the plastic will
outperform metal due to the plastic's ability to remain in a neutral state
within a given heat range where the metal may expand or deform.
The tester also claims the SAE efficiency test data is inaccurate, since the
manufacturer's are untruthful.. He also seems to have an axe to grind with
Fram. Note that the only filters to avoid are Fram manufactured.

If you use a brand name oil filter and change it regularly, I doubt you'll
have any engine related problems caused by the filter. If you drive hard,
change it more often.
