Hi Ken:

I don't think a 0W40 is anything close to a straight 40W in terms of 
viscosity.  Isn't the former about as thin as water?  That's in line with 
what many car manufacturers are calling for now; thin oil means less 
friction, and manufacturing tolerances are now precise enough to allow the 
low viscosity, and its benefits.  But, if one needs a straight 40W, for 
whatever reason, subbing a 0W40 might not do the trick.  As to why Porsche 
and others get away with charging so much for their oil, I can only guess 
that it's additional markup from what the oil refiner might charge 
them.  Be thankful that's a Boxster, and not an Enzo, in your garage.  I 
hear oil (sourced from Shell) for the newest Ferrari is ~$70/quart, and an 
oil change is ~12 quarts.

Anyway, I was only responding to Tess' question about where to source a 
synthetic straight 40W, and I wasn't going to start the discussion about 
why she needed such a heavy oil.  Tess?  As for my 2 Spider's, they run on 
Mobil 1 15W/50, and that seems to work just fine.
