Why does the 164 manual trans use ATF?

The prescribed lubricant for the 164 manual transmission is Dexron II = GM automatic transmission fluid that contains "slippage" compounds. This is the first manual transmission that I have heard of requiring ATF, but I have later learned that it is not the only one. Would anybody enlighten me as to why the engineers would want/need to use this type of lubricant?
Cheers,
