thermostats

On the "cool" thermostat issue, Russ pointed out that too cool a thermostat
will fool a Bosch-injected car into thinking it's still in warm up mode.
This is also a concern on SPICA cars; the thermostatic actuator depends on
water temp to properly set the mixture, and is supposed to get up to the
180-190 degree range for full extension. A cool thermostat, like the
160-degree item I had on a Berlina from Arizona, means the whole
mixture-setup procedure gets messed up, because the TA doesn't extend fully
lean, so you can't properly set it, the pump gap, the rods, or anything
else.

If emissions are an issue in your area, the warmer the engine is, up to a
point, the better and cleaner it's going to run. So probably in most cases
regular temp. thermostats are the best choice, and the source of the
overheating problem is elsewhere.
