Re: Spider starter
I have been advised that the newer, gear reduction starters (like on your
'91 Spider), are not served very well by rebuilds. Rebuilds replace
brushes, etc., but do not replace the plastic components which are part of
today's starters. I would suggest buying the original (yeah, I know they
are almost $300).
I have a '73 Spider (Series 2) and am planning to purchase a gear reduction
starter for the Series 4 Spiders and lose my old, heavy, crappy performing
starter. Since the '72 - '74 Spiders have the same number of flywheel teeth
as the '91 to '94 Series 4 Spiders (130 teeth), I can just bolt it right on.
Series 2A and 3 Spiders would need a ring gear swap from the 131 tooth
ring gear, to the 130 tooth ring gear.

Tony, you might also consider taking your old starter to your local
starter/alternator repair shop. I have had excellent luck with this
option.

Where is the best place to buy a starter for my 91 Spider. Should i get a
rebuilt? Buy new?Should i replace with Bosch as original or are there good
reasonably priced replacements? Any info is appreciated.
Thanks, Tony
