Thanks for the reply with helpful information. Once I found the switch
the solution turned out to be obvious and simple. The rubber stopper
that's supposed to press the switch had worn down on one side, so that
it no longer depressed the switch, pushing it out of the way instead.
Pulling out the stopper, rotating it 180 degrees, and gluing it back in
solved the issue.
