164 - hvac fan info & question

hi all,

i finally got around to replacing the hvac fan on out 200k mile '92 164L.  (thanks for the used fan, alfa-bill - quiet as a sleeping baby!)  i knew there was a reason i put this job off for so long - yuck!  at least i was able to do it w/o removing the a/c evaporator.  sure, i had to loosen it from the body, but no a/c discharging necessary... a really *tight* fit...

anyway, now that it's all back together, it seems the 4th speed on the fan is m.i.a.  what did i screw up by having the controls in the *on* position, whilst the fan wouldn't spin?  it was the only way to get heat/cooling into the car, even tho the fan wouldn't spin...
