Speedo fix, a new twist?

Hi, just ending my few weeks as a newbie '86 Alfa Spider owner and have
just finished plowing through the thousands of messages in the archives
and seeing lots of great tips on how to fix the little things that have
popped up.

I had the typical speedo issue where it would work sporadically and had
a case of the jiggles when it did. I messed around with it for a while
and cleaned the contacts to the sending unit which didn't do much good.
Finally I pulled the thing off and noticed that the part where the cable
went in looked mostly rounded off. I saw that there was a cap on the
other end and unscrewed it and saw that there was a nicely squared
receptacle so took a chance and connected the cable to that side. Now,
other than a little flakiness when it was damp out it has been working
well and the needle has been rock solid. Hadn't seen any mentions of
this in all the speedo related posts so thought I'd mention it.
