Last year I replaced the cat on my '84 GTV 6 (3.0) with a generic high-flow 
unit.  I'm sorry but I don't remember the manufacturer, but the parts-store 
listing for it showed applicability for 3.0 Alfa, 3.5 BMW, and a few others I 
don't remember.  Anyway, it cost me around 100 USD, and I payed a local muffler 
shop around 70 USD to weld it up.  The install ended up being more than (either 
I or the shop) expected because of the exhaust system layout on the GTV 6.  The 
new cat really flows though compared to the stock unit and resulted in 1) easily 
passing California smog rigor, and 2) a (seat-of-the-pants) performance gain.  
All that is to say that I'm sure you can source the cat elsewhere - if you don't 
mind trading the OEM bolt in fitment for a weld in jobber-do.
