head thickness
Steve, not for the first time I'm responding to a question to which I'm
not really qualified...
For starters, dunno when thin is too thin.
However, know you know this, but after verifying the head is currently
flat, I'd make absolutely sure the engine cooled to the point of very
slightly overcooling. This way if you're doing hot laps on a hot day,
you should have a margin of safety.
Not sure what the rule books say, but I'd sure have a pusher electric
fan installed. If for originality sake or the rule book, you could leave
the (hopefully new) plastic fan on. I'd also have a mechanical water
gauge either permanently or temporarily to verify the electric one is
accurate - assuming you have an electric one in now.
Based strictly on intuition but it seems to me a solid copper head
gasket would help eliminate potential problems. Perhaps not. Again, you
might already be using one or if not, have a source for them. Should you
not visit www.headgaskets.com.
I just read their Physics 101 page. Good information even if one is
using stock head gaskets. Talks about how to go about cc-ing the head,
doesn't give the formula - which I'm sure is on the tip of dozens of
Digester's tongues.
Why go through the measuring anguish regarding the measuring of the
final bearing clearances on your crank? Can't believe you can get any
more accurate than Plastigauge - assuming all journals are perfectly
round.
