Phil,
Welcome to the bent valve club. From your description, the engine stalled
while the car was in gear. It is probable that the engine was rotated
backward as the car came to a halt an maybe rocked or was pushed back a
little (like running up on a curb and rolling back). This could cause the
belt to slip a tooth or two. If the (assumed) mechnical tensioner was not
adjusted correctly or was overdue for a change or broken, it would have made
your V6 a prime candidate for this to happen
