basically a calibrated hole mounted in the hose?

Couldn't we find some kind of metal cap that could be (safely) jammed or 
glued inside the bypass hose, with the appropriate hole drilled in it?

Sounds like something the aftermarket guys should be able to get OEM'd 
for them for $5 or so..  unless I'm way off base.  And should be pretty 
easy to kludge up at home..
