Volkswagen did this with their Karmann Ghia convertible (and probably
others, but my brother happens to have a Ghia) and it seems like a
pretty elegant solution. Of course, the back window costs more to

I have to ask--is your brother allowed to drive his VW?

(I figure if there's anything more theoretically dangerous than a flimsy old ragtop, it'd be a flimsy old ragtop with a huge rear weight bias and a nasty German bite-you-in-the-ass swing axle rear suspension.)
