Comparing wire wheels on a bicycle to those on a tricycle or quadracycle is
quite unfair. The forces on a bicycle wheel are normally transferred from
the rim along the spoke to the hub. This happens in a turn as the wheel
leans the approriate amount (vector ?) to make it so.
The forces on a car wheel in a turn effectively try to punch the hub out of
line with the rim. Try making a billy-cart with cycle wheels and see what
happens in a hard turn.
The inventor of the spoked wheel remains, in my mind anyway, a genius of the
first order.
