Re :wire wheels

I saw Jim Allen's Giulia Sprint at the Palo Alto Concours and it had wire
wheels. Here's his two cents. As John H. says so eloquently, 'YMMV.'

"I have had two Borrani wire wheels for 750/101 Alfa Romeo. One came on a
Sprint Lightweight that was raced in Europe. These had silver painted
spokes, hub, and wheel, and had a two eared Alfa Romeo Script knock offs
also painted silver. The stamped dates on the Borrani wheels indicating
date of manufacture was 1957-1959. They came with splined hubs which bolted
to the Alfa drum. The off-set of the wheel was specific to the Sprint, and
the were also supposed to be available on the SS. The off set of the wheels
stuck out to far to fit on a spider even with 155/15 tires. The second set
is identical to the first set in off-set. However the dates are 1961-1962.
The second set has chrome spokes and center hub, with polished alloy wheel.
The second set also has an Alfa Romeo script knock-off, except the knock
offs are three point instead of two. This set is currently on a 1962 Sprint
Veloce Convortovole.

I had a long talk with Pat Braden both at the Stanford Concours and at the
Alfa Convention regarding the judging of the 62 Sprint. On both occasions
he did not deduct any points for the wheels. He felt that they were a
bonified dealer option and would not detract from the cars orginality. The
Sprint placed first in class at Stanford and received 99 points at the Alfa
National Convention and a first in class."
