Flaky Starter

Hi All,
I searched the archives and GTV6.org, but could not come up with any useful
data.
My daily driver's starter motor has been on the blitz.  The solenoid clicks
every time, but occasionally, there is no crank.  A temporary workaround seems
to be nudging the car while in gear, then re-trying;  could be luck, could be
useful, I don't know, but I'd heard this work before in other cars, so I've
been doing it.
Apparently, the issue is somewhere between the solenoid and the motor itself,
but are there any more ways to diagnose a problem _before_ trying to extract
the motor? Are these things reasonably serviceable?
