As resident cheapskate with a garage that has a wooden floor, I use 
refrigerator boxes from the local appliance store, slit for maximum coverage, 
to cover the floor. They are free, stay in place with duct tape and soak up 
spills. When they get dirty, more are available. They clean easily with a 
leaf blower and dropped small parts are easily found.
