Re: How do you add transmission oil?

Hi Chris:

A few years ago I found a nice hand pump made by Valvoline. It simply screws onto the top of an oil bottle, and the nozzle has a clear vinyl hose that you can stick into the filler opening on the gearbox or rear end. It works like one of those ketchup dispensers at Wendy's.

Another trick is to buy a 6 foot length of clear vinyl hose, e.g. at Home Depot, and with the aid of a friend, pour the oil in from above. One person gets under the car and holds the tube in the filler opening, while the other pours the oil from above through a funnel. The hose is of course threaded through the engine bay or rear wheel well, as appropriate.

If you can't find the Spirax for the gearbox, look for Kendall Nitro 70w motor oil. I've been using it for several years, and it works great. For the limited-slip rear end, the Kendall isn't appropriate, and I've been using the Mobil 1 75w/90 synthetic.

In both the gearbox and rear end, make sure you remove the filler plug before you pull the drain plug.

Is there an easy way to add transmission oil to an '84 Spider?
Also, who in southern California sells Shell Spirax 80W90?

Thanks,
Chris
