When I first bought it a few years ago, my '87 Quad behaved in a way 
similar to your description.  I replaced its old, balding Dunlops 
with Pirelli P6000 Sport Veloce tires and had the alignment adjusted 
to factory specs.  These two changes made a world of difference.  The 
car's handling improved dramatically.
