S4 spider valve noise

My 93 spider runs great but I have been getting a progressive " valve"
tapping noise.  I retensioned the chain per shop manual instructions and now
the engine is quiet while at ambient temperature.  After warming up in a
couple of blocks of driving the noise returns and gets louder until at
operating temp and then it stabilizes at a drumming tap beat.  Rest resolves
the problem only after the engine cools.   Any Thoughts?
