Sounds electrical in nature, especially if you can easily get it to
close with the screwdriver (that's an indication the mechanical linkage
is ok).

I'd start by pulling the switch, and checking that it's functioning
properly.  Then unplug the motor and check the connections going to it.
Finally, try working the switch, and see if the motor is getting voltage
with the switch in either position.
