Transmission 164 gremlins????

ALFISTI 164ers

got into the 164, started engine and could not put tranmission in any gear.
In reverse with clutch IN vehicle slowly moved backward!!!
Shut down vehicle and shift went into first.
drove home. All gears worked.
Anyone out there have anything similar happen?
Could this be a linkage or bearing loose or bad?
Thanx for any help.
