Re: 3.0 Liter Engine Rebuild

1. The liners between the 164S and the Milano 3.0 liter engine would be the same, however, the pistons are likely different because the 164S has a 10.5/1 compression ratio, and the Milano is 9.5/1.

2. Most modern re-builders with whom I have spoken seem to almost unanimously recommend manganese-bronze valve guides. These are used by IAP for their factory refurbished heads, as does Sperry, IIRC.

3. First of all, I think you will find that buying a refurbished set of heads from IAP in Virginia for a $800 a pair/exchange is preferable to doing the job yourself, or having it done by a myriad of specialists all over creation. The heads will come to you resurfaced for flatness, with new high-tech valves, valve guides, seals and silicone-chrome springs. Then you can take the finished head to any good racing or speed shop and have them ported and relieved as this is not a task in any way special to the Alfa motor. I have heard (and get this confirmed from someone who is more of an expert than I am; don't take my word for it) on the other hand, that if one over polishes Alfa intake ports, it degrades performance, rather than enhances it.

As for recommending places to have this work done, since you give no indication of where you are located, it would be difficult to help you out there.

Subject: 3.0 Liter Engine Rebuild

Hello, I have several questions about rebuilding a 3.0 liter Milano engine
that I am going to put in my gtv6.
1. What is the difference between 164S liners and pistons, and Milano liners
and pistons?
2. What is the best type of valve guide to use in my engine?
3. Where should I get any kind of head work done, ie: valves, porting and
polishing, etc.?
Thanks,
Dennis
