Apparently, the Wilson gearbox was invented by a British soldier in
1917. It appears this was but the first of a number of competing devices
with more than one approach to "clutchless" engagement.
Preselective was still available in some new vehicles in Britain at
least up to the late 1950s. Over the years, it was used in such cars as
Armstrong-Siddeley, Talbot-Lago and (English) Daimler, as well as quite
commonly in buses and some military (e.g. Dingo) and commercial vehicles.
I don't believe any Italian manufacturer used the process for a car (but
John H. doubtless knows better than I).
Nicky
