Re: Brake Pads - Spider

Bill Bain asked about an upgrade for the Mintex pads on his Spider. Bill,
you could check out Performance Friction
(http://www.performancefriction.com/ <http://www.performancefriction.com/>
). They make a wide range of compounds from carbon metallic street pads to
several grades of full race pads used in some pretty serious machinery. I
have fitted two sets of their Z-rated pads in my Z28 Camaro over the years.
Z-rated is their fast road compound, and gives a significant improvement
over stock without excessive dusting, and they do not require any noticeable
heating to be effective (i.e. they are not dangerous under light street
use). I have used these pads at a few club touring sessions at the Road
America and Blackhawk tracks without any problems, but I cannot say how the
Z compund would stand up to your race use. I would imagine you would need
one of their race compounds, of which I have no experience but they seemed
to be the pads to have (along with Porterfield) in the Camaro racers'
community.

I'm curious to see if any Alfisti have used these pads in their cars,
because when I have talked to local chapter members they don't know the
company. However, they do have applications for Alfa Spiders, at least in
the street compounds listed on their website (I couldn't find race
applications listed). I bought my last set from National Fleet Parts
(http://www.nationalfleetparts.com/ <http://www.nationalfleetparts.com/> ),
who gave me great personal service and an excellent price (no affiliations,
blah balh). They have front Z compound in stock for an 86 Spider (don't
recall what year yours is), but unfortunately they don't deal in the race
compounds.

Hope this helps,
