as both russ and i pointed out, there's a very obvious seam in ERW tubing.
if the cage is not installed, you can look in the tubes and see it. if it
is installed, normally the SCCA requires 3/16" inspection holes at selected
places on a cage. normally you'd have one in the main hoop. for a roll bar
(as opposed to a cage), one in the main hoop would probably be sufficient.
inspection holes should be in the passenger side, in a straight section of
the cage, away from bends and from welds.
once you have an inspection hole, you can use a pick or a piece of wire
bent into a hook to sweep the inside feeling for the seam.
