Re: alfa-digest V9 #307 - ERW Roll Bar Tubing
A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that the local roundy pounder roll
cage builders tend to use ERW tubing also. As Richard mentions, ERW is no
longer legal for SCCA.
There is a way to tell the difference that I learned at a seminar for
tech inspectors at an SCCA national convention. SCCA requires a minimum 3/16
inspection hole in every tube in the cage which has a required dimension -
which means about all of them. Take a strong piece of wire with a hook bent
in the end. Put it in the hole and feel around. ERW tubing has a definite
welded seam that you can feel with such a probe. On the outside of unpainted
tubing, the seam is obvious and it runs the length of the tubing.
