Motor Oil vs. Motor Oil

Hi all,
I am debating what oil to use these days. I am aware that changing oil
types on a high-mileage engine is not a good idea, but I am sick of paying
$40 for mobil1 every time I change my oil (3k miles).

Can someone give me an unbiased opinion on Synthetic oils? Consumer
reports has done extensive testing on Synthetic vs. Organic oils and has
found no conclusive evidence that synthetic is better. I am looking for an
explanation somewhere along the lines of when Eric Storhok gets to talking
about emissions...

I use Mobil1 20W50 in my 12V (because of those valve guides) and Pennzoil
10W40 organic in the 24V engines at the moment, and am considering using
organic in the future in my 12V.

Any advice is appreciated.
