Well, if these fit into the budget, you should consider: 

1.  More displacement -- the 3 liter engine *really* makes a difference.
If there isn't one of those handy, I think that there was/is a kit to
take a 2.5 liter up to 2.8 liters

2.  Even if you keep the 2.5 liter, head work really helps, particularly
if you've already done the exhaust. 

3.  "S" cams are worth it if you've done the head work.
