Alfa Battery Wire Size
<From: alfacybersite <acs@domain.elided>
<I just received West Marine's catalog. While not critical at the
moment,
I was wondering if the appropriate size is a #1 or a #2 (or?). The #1's
apparently come in 50' rolls only, whereas one can buy a 25' roll in
#2.>
I'd use the largest wire you can afford but for what its worth, here's a
table of voltage drops assuming 20 feet of wire between the battery and
the starting motor. I also assume that the starter draws between 200 and
300 amps while cranking the engine.
Wire Size ohms/Mft volts drop
2 .201 .8 - 1.2
1 .154 .6 - .9
1/0 .122 .5 - .75
2/0 .0967 .4 - .6
Hope this helps.
