Another top question
In #266 (and dammit would everyone quit subscribing to the one post at a
time arrangement + all move to the West coast so when a good deal on
some hard to find Alfetta GT parts comes up, I don't miss out? Hunh?)
Scott Johnson asks a perfectly reasonable question regarding his top
bows (unfortunately he's going to get a smart-ass answer):
"In the "how-to" factory top R&R manual, it says to clean the top frame
using a "suitable solvent". There's probably 30 years of accumulated
adhesive on some parts of that frame, so I was wondering if anyone out
there had tips on just what a "suitable solvent" might be? Biba? :)"

Scott, get brutal. Betcha you also have a fair amount of rust on the top
frame and bows. Get out your 4"
Makita angel grinder and put on some medium coarse sand paper. Place the
top mechanism on four or six
of the plastic milk crates you 'borrowed' from Trader Joes about 25
years ago, then grind away.
If you're anal, spray paint with epoxy primer first - or - just paint
with (I prefer satin, but many use gloss)
Rustoleum spray paint. Use two coats in either situation.
Obviously any solvent (lacquer thinner) that cuts 30 year old dried
contact cement is either going to
remove or at least soften the paint beneath.
But you knew that.
