74 GTV Gauge color

Hi everyone,

I'm restoring the gauge cluster on my 74 GTV.  It seems like they are just 
too dim / not enough contrast between the markings and the background.  My 
gauge faces are a medium/dark gray background.  Is that faded from black ( 
the red markings aren't faded ) or are they all like that ?    Also, had 
anyone found a way to make them brighter at night ?  Higher wattage bulbs ?

Any help would be appreciated.
